West Rockport Fire Station plans also on the April 28 agenda

Rockport Village to have a new ice cream shop, pending Planning Board review

ROCKPORT — Thursday evening, April 28, the Rockport Planning Board will consider a proposal to turn a side entrance of lower Union Hall in Rockport Village into Freya’s Ice Cream shop.

If a change of use for the building is approved, a 790 square-foot space that now exists within Union Hall, which is under ownership of 24 Central Street LLC, will be leased for the food service business.

Additionally, Freya’s Ice Cream LLC is asking the Rockport Planning Board to approve construction of a 200 square-foot deck at the back of the building for seating purposes.

The deck would sit below an existing deck directly upstairs, and which is under current use of the Nina June restaurant.

Therese Inman is the registered agent for Freya’s Ice Cream, according to the application.

Because there is no parking associated with the building, the application proposes that the business will use on-street parking.

At the same meeting, the Planning Board will also consider the town’s plans to building a new 5,650-square-foot fire station in West Rockport.

Built in 1973, the existing West Street Fire Station is to be torn down.  The town plans to construct a new fire station on the expanded fire station lot at the corner of routes 90 and 17 in West Rockport.

The new building will be sited behind the existing station. The existing station will be demolished after the new station is completed.

See the floor plans for the fire station here.

In November 2021, Rockport voters approved the warrant article asking them for approval to build a new fire station. The vote was 1,099 yes, 265 no.

Amanda Austin of 2A Architects, LLC, drew plans for the building, which is to house up to four fire engines or EMS vehicles, as well as provide sleeping accommodations and a meeting room for firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

The structure is to cost approximately $2 million.

Additional parking spaces would be added to Route 17 side of the structure.
