GAME STORY
Southern Maine’s Erin McNamara finished with 24 points and was one of three Huskies in double figures as USM upended the University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team, 86-57, in Saturday’s championship game of the Dunkin’ Donuts UMaine-Farmington Tip-Off Tournament at Dearborn Gym.
Taylor Flood netted 15 points for Southern Maine (2-0) while Tournament MVP Mariah Callender tallied 10 points. McNamara, who scored 17 of her 24 points in the second half, also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
UMaine-Farmington (1-1) guard Lindsay Ranquist led the Beavers with 19 points, one short of her career high, and was the only UMF player in double digits. Forward Elizabeth Ferry and guard Mallory Bonnevie each chipped in with seven.
Forward Meghan Smith finished with four points and five rebounds while battling inside against the taller Huskies, and joined Ranquist on the All-Tournament Team.
UMaine-Farmington trailed by just one point, 32-31, at the half, after getting to the free-throw line 16 times on USM’s 11 fouls, and successfully converting 11 of those.
Southern Maine took charge early in the second half, opening the frame with an 11-2 run, including a pair of 3-pointers by McNamara. The Huskies finished the stretch with a 43-33 lead with 17:02 remaining, and began pulling away from there.
Another 10-0 run extended the Huskies’ lead to 60-41 with 12:00 showing in the second half.
Bonnevie’s trey with 9:15 remaining pulled the Beavers to back within 15 of the Huskies, 62-47, but USM got the lead back up to over 20 points on Jenna Moore’s layup with under five minutes to play.
Farmington briefly cut the lead to back under 20 down the stretch, but 3-pointers by Jordan Knowlton, Moore, and McNamara in the final two minutes sealed the win for the Huskies.
UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Bates College. Southern Maine travel to Biddeford, Maine, on Tuesday to face the University of New England.
