Police seek information in Belfast gem store burglary

BELFAST - A sign outside Bennett’s Gems & Jewelry reads “Got Gold? Get Cash!” According to police, a burglar who broke into the Searsport Avenue store early Monday morning may have left with some of both.
Belfast Police Sgt. Dan Fitzpatrick said the trespasser was able to enter the store through a rear window without breaking the glass at around 1 a.m. Dec. 1 and exit after taking goods and cash without setting off the store’s alarm system.
Police have surveillance video and still photos of the person in action, but Fitzpatrick said these gave few hints as to who it might have been.
“Unfortunately, the burglar has a concealed face that limits our ability to identify them,” he said, adding that even the person’s gender remained undetermined.
Fitzpatrick said police have not yet received a complete list from Bennett’s Gems of what was taken, but he said generally it was a combination of merchandise and cash. An employee at the store said Wednesday that some gold items were stolen in addition to cash but declined to say more.
Police are asking anyone with information about the burglary to contact the Belfast Police Department, 338-2420, and speak to Sgt. Fitzpatrick or Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham.
“The more exposure it gets the merrier,” Fitzpatrick said. “Somebody knows who did this and we have confidence in the community that someone will send us in the right direction.”
