For hundreds of Midcoast children, the Penobscot Bay YMCA’s Summer Camp is more than just fun — it’s a lifeline. As one of the few affordable, all-day, full-week programs in Knox County, the Y’s four camps offer safe, enriching environments where kids build confidence, form friendships, and make lasting memories — while giving working parents peace of mind and dependable care all summer long, according to a news release from the Y.

To ensure every child has access to this essential program, the Penobscot Bay YMCA has launched a $90,000 Summer Camp Campaign. Funds raised will go directly toward keeping camp rates affordable and providing financial assistance for families who need it most.

"Summer camp is a vital part of how we serve working families," said Whitney Files, CEO, in the release. "We never want cost to be a barrier. But with rising expenses and fewer supports available, we need the community’s help more than ever."

This year presents a number of new challenges. Due to construction at the Camden Snow Bowl, the Y’s largest camp has moved its site to Hope Elementary School, resulting in significantly higher transportation costs, the release said.

In addition, budget restrictions with Maine’s Child Care Subsidy Program have left many lower-income families on waitlists, unable to access the critical support they relied on in the past.

In response, the YMCA is working to raise funds to help bridge this gap and support hardworking families across Knox County—where over 40% of households fall under the ALICE category (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) income threshold and struggle to afford basic necessities. "With the community’s support, we can breakdown financial barriers and ensure that no child is turned away from the life-changing experience of summer camp,” said Files.
