Oceanside softball’s offensive power propels Mariners to win over Belfast

BELFAST — The Oceanside and Belfast varsity softball teams squared off Thursday, May 2 in Belfast. 

By game’s end, Oceanside’s bats boosted the Mariners to a 12-1 victory. 

With the victory, Oceanside improved its record to 6-1 and will host Mount View in its next game on Monday, May 6 at 4 p.m.

With the loss, Belfast’s record now sits at 2-3. The Lions will travel to Brewer for its next game on Monday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Oceanside plated two runs in each the first, fourth and seventh innings, while Belfast plated its lone run in the fourth. 

Oceanside tallied 15 hits and Belfast tallied four. 

Oceanside committed one error and Belfast committed two. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Oceanside was Chloe Jones, who fanned 14 batters in seven innings of work. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Belfast was Brooke Richards (6.2 innings, five strikeouts, three walks) and Gia Davila (1.1 innings, three strikeouts, four walks, one hit-by-pitch). 

At the plate for Oceanside were Adriana Whitemore (triple, two singles, RBI), Lily Judeki (three singles, RBI), Raechel Joyce (triple, two singles, three RBIs), Jessica Watkinson (two singles), Abby Veilleux (double, single, RBI), Jones (single) and Kalli Grover (single). 

At the plate for Belfast were Brooke Richards (double, single), Kayci Faulkingham (double) and Sarah Fuller (triple). 

Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester noted he was impressed by the offensive play of Whitemore, Judeki, Watkinson, Joyce and Veilleux. He was also impressed by the pitching performance of Jones. 

“The team is working hard to improve and I'm proud of their work to this point,” he stated. “We need to stay focused and keep learning. We need to get better and peek at the end.”
