Oceanside girls sweep Morse in exciting contests

Simmons leads Mariners to win!

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside girls basketball team hosted Morse of Bath in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday evening with both the JV and varsity teams picking up hard fought wins over the Shipbuilders. The varsity picked up a 39-28 win while the JV took a 40-37 win.  

Oceanside led after each quarter, 8-3, 14-10 at the half and 20-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Trailing in the fourth quarter 26-25 the Mariners went on a 14-2 run to close out the game and give the varsity the win.

With the win Oceanside goes to 6-7 on the season and is currently in eighth place in the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point standings in Class A North. Lawrence is in first place 13-0. The top 1o teams make the playoffs.

Scoring for Oceanside were, sophomore Gabby Simmons led the way with a game high 11 points including 7-8 from the foul line; Makenna Brooks 10; Kalyn Grover and Haley Montgomery six each; Brianna Dugan three; Alexis Mazurek two; and Jillian Brooks one.

The Mariners were 17-of-27 (63 percent) from the foul line. They did not have any 3-point baskets.

For the Shipbuilders were, Noa Sreden had seven points; Isabella Paulus, Signe Ostergaard and Emma Harrington five each; Katie Moore five; and Sierra Wallace two.

Morse had one 3-pointer from Sreden and the were 5-of-8 (63 percent) from the foul line.

After leading the whole game Morse was able to take a 26-25 lead in the fourth quarter before Oceanside went on an impressive 14-2 run to shut down the Shipbuilders and capturing the win.

Next up for the Mariners is a Friday, Jan. 22 varsity doubleheader at Medomak Valley with a 7:15 scheduled tip off. This will be the second meeting for the two teams with Medomak taking the first one 39-35.

JV GAME
Oceanside 40, Morse 37... At Rockland, this was a back and forth game with it coming down to the wire for Oceanside to capture the win.

Morse took an 18-14 first quarter lead, but Oceanside held the 22-21 half time lead. By the end of the third quarter Morse had retaken the lead 34-30 and the Mariners needed to pick up the pace in the final stanza as they outscored Morse 10-3 to take the win.

Scoring for the Mariners were, Elise Laslavic had a game high 13 points; Hope Butler nine; Abby Veilleux five; Amelia Campbell and Kassidy Robinson four each; Raechel Joyce three; and Sara Dorr two. The Mariners were 8-of-24 (34 percent) from the foul line.

For the Shipbuilders, Latie Moore had nine; Marissa Parks seven; Isabella Monboquette and Marija Medenica six each; Maddy Mitchell four; Samantha Brown three; and Hannah Card two. Morse had three 3-pointers, two from Moore and one from Mitchell. The Shipbuilders were 6-12 (50 percent) from the foul line.
