BELFAST — The University of Maine Hutchinson Center will offer Concepts of Oceanography course for high school students on Mondays and Wednesdays, July 15 – Aug. 26, from 3 to 8:15 p.m.

Through a partnership between the Maine Department of Education and the University of Maine System, tuition for this and other courses is waived for qualified high school students in grades 9–12.

Concepts in Oceanography (SMS 110) and Concepts in Oceanography Lab (SMS 111) is a four-credit course which focuses on basic concepts in physical, geological, chemical and biological oceanography. The course includes an introduction to the relationship between the ocean and the atmosphere. It ends with a discussion of global change issues.

“Taking UMaine’s concepts in oceanography is a great way for high school students to get a jump-start on all STEM-related majors,” said Nancy Bergerson, coordinator of Student Support Services at the Hutchinson Center. “This is an amazing opportunity for students to save time and money and to begin their college career while still in high school.”

Instructor and UMaine faculty member, Dave Thomas has been a science instructor for 18 years and holds a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.S. in science education from Cornell University.
