Norman Cunningham, obituary
CAMDEN — Norman Augustus Cunningham, 95, of Camden, died June 5, 2015, at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. Born at home in Searsmont on Feb. 24, 1920, he was the son of Bennie L. and Gladys (Sutter) Cunningham.
During World War II, while serving with the U.S. Army in the European African Middle Eastern Theater, he participated in battles and campaigns in Tunisia, Naples, Rome, Southern France and Germany and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Norman married Barbara Bartlett in Rockland on April 13, 1946, and worked for 43 years at the Knox Woolen Mill, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Camden American Legion Post #30, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a former member of the Camden VFW.
He enjoyed his trips exploring the woods of Northern Maine in search of moose and traveled many logging roads. An avid outdoorsman, Norman liked to go hunting and fishing. He cherished his pet dogs.
Norman was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Cunningham, who died in 1998; his sisters, Bertha Ripley and Hester Graff; his brothers, Elmer Cunningham and Bertrand Cunningham; and a great-grandson, newborn Eric Gallant. Surviving is his daughter, Carolyn Gallant and her husband, Fred, of Saco; two grandsons, Fred C. Gallant II and his wife, Stacy, and Brad D. Gallant; a great-grandson, Nicholas Gallant; a special cousin, Craig Cunningham and his wife, Bea, of Cundy's Harbor; and his good friend, Hester Ryan.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Appleton with the Rev. Linda Campbell Marshall officiating.
