New owner purchases 279 Main Street with no plans to demolish former Sears Building

    ROCKLAND — A proposal to partially demolish the “Sears Building” at 279 Main Street, in Rockland, has been withdrawn permanently.

    Maine Sport Outfitters, of Rockport, has purchased the building, with plans to open a second branch of its outdoor sporting goods store, according to Rockland City Manager Tom Luttrell, in an email.

    The closing on the property may occur as soon as tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 5, according to Luttrell. January 5 is the very day the current owner, Crystal Darling and 279, LLC were scheduled to return before the Rockland Planning Board to further review the demolition proposal.
