Myanmar's 75-Year Struggle: Author Charlie Costello examines Burma's political evolution
ROCKPORT — The Camden Conference Community Events Series continues at the Rockport Public Library with an illuminating presentation on Burma/Myanmar's complex political journey. Author and photographer Charlie Costello will present "Seventy-Five Years of Political Instability in Post-Colonial Burma (Myanmar): An Overview" on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m.
This in-person event is free and open to all.
Drawing from his three visits to the country, Costello will trace Myanmar's turbulent path from the Burma Independence Act of 1947 through the military coup of February 2, 2021. His analysis provides crucial context for understanding one of Southeast Asia's most challenging political situations.
Charlie Costello, a Rockport resident, brings deep insight into Myanmar's political landscape through his work as both scholar and observer. He is the author of Hanging Out in Burma: Laundry Lines and Democracy Hanging in the Balance and holds an MA in Asian Studies from the University of San Francisco. His expertise as a photographer and writer offers unique perspectives on Myanmar's ongoing struggle for democracy.
This presentation is hosted by the Rockport Public Library and offered as a free community event in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference – Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective, February 21-23, 2025, live at the Camden Opera House and live-streamed to the Strand Theatre in Rockland, Lunt Auditorium in Falmouth, and to homes and classrooms worldwide.
