Met Opera’s “Fire Shut Up in my Bones” returns to the Strand

ROCKLAND — Following multiple sold out shows last fall, the Strand Theatre will present two encore screenings of Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up In My Bones, the first opera by a Black composer presented on the Metropolitan Opera stage, on Saturday, February 12 at 1 p.m. and Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m.
In this program, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s memoir. Featuring a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the opera tells a poignant story about a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown — two of the creators of the Met’s recent production of Porgy and Bess — co-direct this new staging. Baritone Will Liverman, one of opera’s young artists, stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie.
This cinema transmission is part of the Met’s Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.
The Strand Theatre’s Covid-19 safety protocols include setting the auditorium capacity at 30%, or 100 seats per show, providing reserved seating with a buffer of empty seats around each group and requiring all patrons to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask for the duration of their stay.
