MBTA Scholarships available for Maine students pursuing transportation careers
Maine Better Transportation (MBTA) is seeking applicants for scholarships awarded through the MBTA Educational Foundation. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $3,500 for Maine students pursuing degree majors in transportation-related fields for the 2025-2026 academic year, and the deadline is August 1. Academic programs tied to transportation careers include trades, engineering, construction management, aviation, marine, rail, heavy equipment operation, and diesel mechanics. In addition to general awards, the Foundation offers several named scholarships.
- Kenneth W. Burrill Scholarship: Created in 2008 to honor Ken Burrill, an MBTA past president and long-time advocate for transportation investment. Ken had a distinguished career with H.E. Sargent and Bridgecorp and was a key fundraiser for Maine’s transportation bond campaigns.
- Timothy M. Folster Scholarship: Endowed by Sargent Corporation to recognize Tim Folster’s decades-long impact on Maine’s transportation industry. Civil and mechanical engineering students interested in a construction career are encouraged to apply, especially (but not limited to) employees or family members of Sargent Corp.
- Frank A. Healy Scholarship: Established by Rodney Lane and John Wardwell with contributions from MBTA members to honor Frank Healy’s legacy of industry advocacy and mentorship. Students attending community colleges, UMaine, or those employed by Northeast Paving, Dirigo Materials, Copiam, or any VINCI Construction USA company are encouraged to apply.
- Paul M. Koziell Scholarship: Created by the MBTA Educational Foundation with support from his family in memory of MBTA Past President Paul Koziell. Paul was president of CPM Constructors and helped grow the MBTA scholarship endowment significantly.
- Millard W. Pray Scholarship: Established by Eldon Morrison of CPM Constructors in honor of Millard Pray, with matching support from MBTA members. Millard was a self-made leader in Maine’s transportation industry. Preference is given to students affiliated with CPM Constructors.

Founded in 1939 as the Maine Good Roads Association, MBTA is a coalition of organizations and individuals who plan, design, build, maintain, and use Maine’s transportation system.
