Massive duck returns to Belfast Harbor with an updated message: Greater Joy

BELFAST — The mysterious Joy duck that first appeared in Belfast Harbor in August 2021 has made an autumn return, reappearing sometime before dawn Oct. 21. The only difference between the two appearances appears to be the name; whereas a single Joy originally adorned the duck, this time around the message is greater joy.

The canary colored creation towers over many of the smaller boats in the harbor, and all of the residents and visitors who are flocking to the Footbridge to catch a sight. Given its size and brightness, a trip to Armistice Bridge isn’t required to take in the bobbing bird — it can be seen from many vantage points, from the Route 1 bridge to Young’s Lobster Pound.

It remains to be seen whether the reemergence of the Joy duck will create as much buzz as its first appearance, but one thing is for sure: the joy is palpable.
