Mary Sue Weeks is January artist at Waldoboro Public Library
WALDOBORO — Waldoboro Public Library’s January Artist-of-the-Month is Mary Sue Weeks of Bremen. Weeks has been painting ever since she was a child when she took lessons from local Damariscotta artist Dorothy Apgar from the ages of 8 - 12. She graduated from Colby College with a major in Art History and after spending many years in the nonprofit sector as a funds developer, she returned to her first love – painting – and from 2000 to 2004, created Decorative Illusions, providing quality decorative wall enhancements for fine home and business interiors, specializing in trompe l’oeil and faux finishing.
Weeks work' can be seen in the Rockport Masonic Lodge, Morse’s Sauerkraut in North Waldoboro, and in the Visitors’ Center at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester as well as many private homes throughout Midcoast Maine and Boston.
As an art major and life-long painter, Weeks has a firm foundation in color theory and design and has studied perspective and trompe l’oeil techniques with artist Andrea Tober of A Matter of Perception in Elkridge, Maryland, and has also completed a five-day Faux Finish and Business
Workshop from Donna’s Designs with faux finish artist Donna Mabrey in Snellville, Georgia. As a member of the Stencil Artisans League International (SALI) and the American Society of Decorative Painters, her Tuscan Powder Room was featured on the cover and in a two-page spread in the winter 2001 edition of “The Faux Finisher” magazine.
For over twenty years, Weeks has been the Scenic Artist for the Lincoln County Community Theater, and in September 2024 collaborated on sets for “Tanglin’ Hearts” at the Waldo Theater. She continues to paint for pleasure and profit, and has had works shown at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta, Concinitty Deli in Bath, the Waldo Theater, Waldoboro Public Library, Cushing Historical Society Art Barn, and the Senior College Exhibit in Belfast.
Now that she is retired, she has returned to her first love, oil painting.
In March 2019 she attended a 3-day workshop with artist Nancy Medina in Flower Mound, Texas and began a series of flower paintings, a new genre for her as she has always painted landscapes.
