Maine food historian Sandy Oliver launches new cookbook with conversation, book signing in Camden
CAMDEN — For eighteen years, Sandy Oliver sent a weekly recipe to the Bangor Daily News for her column called Taste Buds. To come up with over 900 recipes during that time, she turned to cooks from Midcoast to Machias who shared their cooking experience and advice along with the recipes for everything from breakfast to dessert. Her new book, Down East Delicious, is her second compilation of the column recipes.
Chef Sam Richman, of Sammy’s Deluxe, in Rockland, will join Oliver at First Fig in Camden to discuss her newest book, Down East Delicious, in the broader context of Maine food, Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m., at First Fig, 31 Elm St., Camden.
Oliver, in addition to cooking and gardening at her Islesboro home, has been a historian of American, particularly New England, food since 1971 and is the author of books on food history as well as Maine Home Cooking, the first compilation from the BDN column. She writes Journal of an Island Kitchen for the Working Waterfront published by the Island Institute, and a column about gardening for the Islesboro Island News.
Copies will be available for purchase and signed in-person by the author. Espresso, wine and snacks will be available.
Event is free but space is limited. Please RSVP via firstfigmaine@gmail.com.
