Local Boy and Girl Scout troops stand at attention on Memorial Day, paying their respects

CAMDEN — Girl Scout Troop 1341 and Allie VanRyn from Troop 227 waved flags and honored Fallen Soldiers in front of the Camden Public Library in the morning on Memorial Day, and a little later, Boy Scout Troop 200 members stood at attention outside the Elm Street Congregational Church.
It was a quiet ceremony on all their parts, paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their home and country.
Troop 200 has traditionally participated in the Memorial Day activities for Camden, Rockport, and sometimes even Lincolnville, as have Girl Scout troops 1341 and 227.
“As Scouts, we feel it is important to be good citizens, and to be role models,” said Scoutmaster Ed Weber. “We chose to show our respects to fallen soldiers and the local towns in this manner because it allowed us to follow all of the guidelines we are aware of (masks, more than 6 feet between each person, and the group did not have more than 10 boys), and also allowed a relatively significant impact.”
All the many people driving by all the troops were grateful for the dedication.
“A lot of people saw us in the hour we were there, and quite a few honked and waved,” he said. “Additionally, Troop 200 is chartered to the First Congregational Church in Camden, so we felt that was an appropriate location to show our respects.”
The Boy Scouts had not convened since March 15, because of the pandemic, and were happy to see each other.
“The boys know that what they did showed true respect as Americans, for soldiers who have died protecting our freedom,” said Weber. “It may have been a small act, but it allowed our young men to feel like they made an important contribution.”
