FRIENDSHIP — Ivan Averill Hill passed away on April 13, 2021 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born on July 28, 1941 to Niilo and Elizabeth (Oxton) Hill in Waldoboro, Maine.

He is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Teddy and Anthony Hill; as well as his brother-in-law, Wesley Lash.

Ivan is survived by his loving wife, best friend and constant companion of 56 years, Polly Hill of Friendship; his brothers Rodney (Jeanne) Hill of Bangor, Norman (Dianne) Hill of Friendship, Daryl Hill of Warren, Timothy Hill of Rockland and Edward Hill of Warren; as well as his two sons, Keith Hill (Kelly Grant) of Woolwich and Andrew (Lisa) Hill of Pittston; his precious grandchildren, Wyatt and Drew Hill; and his great-nephews, Ryan and Brady Simmons who called him Bumpa.

Ivan was welcomed into his wife’s family and he leaves behind in-laws that he loved, Neil (Bonnie) Lash of Waldoboro, Irv (Willi) Lash of Augusta, Cindy Lash of Friendship, Theresa Fullerton of Warren, and Sue (Tom) Simmons of Friendship.

Also left behind are many nieces and nephews and their families that Ivan held near and dear to his heart.

As the eldest of eight brothers, Ivan had a rough start to life. But with a healthy dose of Finnish Sisu he worked hard to spin that Warren High School diploma (class of 1959) into a successful career. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he returned home to Warren where he met Polly Lash and they married on March 26, 1965. He worked in the paper mill in Bucksport for 33 years, working his way up to become the Senior Electrical Engineer for the mill. During this time, he and Polly raised their two sons in Bucksport.

In 1998 Ivan and Polly retired to Polly’s hometown of Friendship where he built her a home in a place that they both loved. They attended the Advent Christian Church together and deepened the love and connection they had with the community.

Ivan enjoyed riding his motorcycle, boating, skiing, fishing, travelling and reading. He was a Godly man who loved the Lord and his family. He always seemed happiest helping others with whatever they needed, from an electrical problem all the way to a personal problem solved subtly over a cup of strong coffee. He was a cherished friend.

Ivan will be deeply missed, but each of his loved ones will continue to carry him and his wisdom in their hearts.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at the Old Village Cemetery in Friendship.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Advent Christian Church in Friendship.
