ISLESBORO and NORTH HAVEN — New superintendents are set to be in place at all three area island schools when school resumes for the 2019-2020 school year.

After Vinalhaven Community School hired a new superintendent, who will also serve as the school’s principal this school year, the communities of Islesboro and North Haven will also welcome new superintendents.

    Islesboro Central School

The Islesboro school committee has given the nod a new part-time superintendent, one who is familiar to leading Waldo County schools, following the resignation of Robert “Bob” England.

Earlier this month, the committee approved Chris Downing as the new Islesboro superintendent.

Downing is the superintendent for RSU 20, which includes Searsport Elementary School, Searsport District Middle School and Searsport District High School.

The position includes 24 contract days, or two days per month, as superintendent.

The contract will run for one year.

“With unyielding support from the community for each student, this one-of-a-kind island community is poised to establish a new 10-year vision for moving forward, built on our history of excellence,” a job posting for the position stated.

    North Haven Community School

When the new school year begins at North Haven Community School, a new superintendent will be in place as Robert “Bob” England resigned in June.

The part-time position requires two days per week with an overnight on the island.

“The North Haven School Board, with community input, has developed a strategic plan that focuses on student exposure to and growth in traditional disciplines while at the same time offering varied and exciting experiential learning opportunities,” a job posting for the position stated.

Lyford Beverage, who has five decades of educational experience, has been named interim superintendent while a search for a permanent superintendent is underway.

Beverage previously served as superintendent or interim superintendent in Somerville, Madison, Anson and Wiscasset.
