Hitting the rails at Camden’s harbor hill

CAMDEN — It may have looked like the Camden Snow Bowl, but nope, it was Harbor Park, transformed with man-made snow and rails, where boarders and skiers spent Sunday afternoon tricking and wrecking by the sea. Winterfest’s first-ever “Cam Jam,” a freestyle ski and snowboard competition in downtown Camden got underway, providing local teens with the opportunity to show off their skills on the hills.
The temporary terrain park had been built by Zenith students, the alternative school program of Camden Hills Regional High, with the help of Snow Bowl personnel and machinery. The competition and festivities is all part of Winterfest, a week-long celebration of mid-winter, culminating this coming weekend, Feb. 7-9 with the Toboggan Nationals.
The weather was warm, temperature climbing to 40F, and cloudy Feb. 2, with sprinkles of rain softening the ice and hard edge of winter. Nobody was complaining.
Twenty-four teen skiiers and snowboarders warmed up for about an hour before the competition began. Four judges representing two snowboarders and two skiiers ranked the contestants on a point system. Afterwards, the participants were able to just have fun with a 15-minute Jam session.
