Winterfest begins this weekend in Camden

CAMDEN — The first week in February is shaping up to be a fun one, kicking off with Winterfest and CamJam Feb. 1-2 and ending with three days of toboggan racing Feb. 7-9.
Beginning at noon Saturday, Feb. 1, the Camden Public Library Amphitheatre will come alive with community ice carving. Groups, individuals, schools and businesses will carve crystalline sculptures using traditional tools of ice-carving artisans. Tim Pierce, executive chef and master ice-carver at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, will assist the community carvers with their creations.
Also Feb. 1, winter indoor crafts and face-painting will be offered, free of charge, to the younger set in the library’s Picker Room. The warm rotunda of the library will also host live music by All That Jazz. Back outside on Atlantic Avenue, a merry band of culinary volunteers will serve a variety of delicious hot soups and light snacks donated by local restaurants, with proceeds benefiting the library.
This year, Winterfest will be expanded into a week-long community festival. Giant snow sculptures will enhance the Village Green, the library’s lawn, the Amphitheatre and the Snow Bowl. Come watch their creation on Feb. 1 and enjoy the sculptures throughout the week. The Camden Downtown Business Group and the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the sculptures, which will be created by snow sculpting professionals traveling up from southern Maine. The town of Camden and the Snow Bowl will be making the activity possible by constructing the snow-packed forms that the sculptors will work from. Library activities are presented by the Winterfest Committee and the Camden Public Library, with support from The First.
Also this weekend, the Snow Bowl will host the inaugural CamJam World Championships, starting with practice sessions and demonstrations of trick skiing and snowboarding in Harbor Park Feb. 1 from noon to 3 p.m. CamJam rail jam elements will be open to all skiers and snowboarders; helmets required and participants under 18 need a parent’s signature. On Sunday, Feb. 2, the preliminary rail jam competition will begin at 1 p.m. in Harbor Park, with the CamJam finals to be held at the Snow Bowl Friday, Feb. 7.
To finish out the week, the 24th annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships will run Feb. 7-9 at the Snow Bowl. Registration is open Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the toboggan chute is open to teams and the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. From 4 to 7 p .m., two-person and three-person teams have the option to take their qualifying first runs. The Toboggan Nationals continue Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Toboggan enthusiasts are encouraged to park in downtown Camden and take the shuttle bus out to the Snow Bowl ($2 shuttle bus fee to the Snow Bowl, free ride back to town). Buses will run to and from the Camden Village Green Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the races, West Bay Rotary Club hosts the Down the Chute Beer and Wine Tasting Friday, from 3 to 7 p.m., and the Chili Challenge Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until the food runs out. Also Saturday, from noon to 1 p.m. there will be a Costume Parade and Contest before the judges, with the finals and Toboggan Nationals awards ceremony rounding out the event Sunday.
