Herring Gut Coastal Science Center community programs: Cabin Fever lecture, winter tracking walk

Thursday, February 05, 2026 - 01:00 pmHerring Gut Coastal Science Center invites the community to stay engaged with Maine’s coast this winter through two educational February programs—an indoor Cabin Fever Series lecture on nearshore monitoring in the Gulf of Maine, and an outdoor workshop focused on animal tracking, signs, and scat.
According to Herring Gut, in a news release, these events are designed for community members of all ages who want to learn more about Maine’s natural environment, seasonal wildlife activity, and the science that supports healthy coastal ecosystems.
Cabin Fever Series: Nearshore Monitoring in the Gulf of Maine

Herring Gut’s final Cabin Fever Series lecture of the season will feature Ari Leach, Marine Resource Scientist with the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR). Leach will share insights on the DMR’s year-round nearshore monitoring efforts, including how the survey supports the management of commercially important species and contributes to understanding change in the Gulf of Maine.

Tracking, Signs, & Scat: Winter Animal Activity Walk
Saturday, February 7 from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Bamford Preserve (Maine Coast Heritage Trust)
Long Cove Rd., St. George, ME
Participants are invited to join Maine Master Naturalist Josh Waguli and Herring Gut Coastal Science Center staff for a hands-on crash course in winter tracking and wildlife identification. The group will explore animal tracks, signs, and scat while walking approximately 0.7 miles on the Bamford Preserve trail system.
Attendees should dress for the weather and bring water and snacks. Snowshoes or yaktraks are recommended, depending on trail conditions.
