Helen Hupper, obituary
TENANTS HARBOR – Helen J. Hupper, 89, died peacefully on Jan. 13, 2017, at home.
Born in Rockland on May 17, 1927, she was one of eight children born to Colby and Gladys Wilson Hupper. Until she was 9 years old, Helen was raised on the island of Crie Haven. Settling on the mainland, she attended local schools, graduating from St. George High School in 1945.
For many years, Helen worked with her brother at Art's Lobster, and later at F.J. O'Hara as a bookkeeper. Helen has always loved the water and being on it. Even while working her full time jobs, she owned her own open boat from which she hauled traps. Often she would rise early, hauling before work, or just after coming home for the day.
She was a caregiver at heart, taking care of the older generation like her own parents, several aunts and uncles, right down to her many nieces and nephews. She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews, and considered them her children, and they adored her. Helen also had a special place in her heart for animals.
An avid Red Sox Fan, she never missed a game on TV. She was a no-nonsense, steadfast, hard working woman, and owned several summer rental cottages, which she advertised with a sign that read: “Reasonable rates for unreasonable people – Inquire Within.” She had a quick wit and sense of humor and loved to tell a good joke.
She will be sadly missed.
Predeceased by six brothers and sisters and a nephew, Newell “Sonny” McLain; Helen is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Ames of Tenants Harbor; her nieces and nephews, Judy Crudell of Cherry Hill, N.J., Janet Korpinen and Leslie Korpinen, both of Tenants Harbor, Elizabeth Wellman of Camden, Del., Alan, Craig, David and Brain Hupper, all of Tenants Harbor, and Sharon Cesowich of Unckersville, Conn., as well as several cousins.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. The Rev. Stephen Maxwell will officiate. Private interment will be held at Ridge Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860.
