WALDOBORO — The Waldo Theatre, located at 916 Main St., will host Halcyon String Quartet’s musical rendition of Robert McCloskey’s book Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man, on April 9 at 7 p.m.

The story, narrated by Ben Meader, is a whale of a tale told in the classic tradition which also features projections of McCloskey’s iconic artwork alongside Halcyon’s arrangements of musical favorites Beyond the Sea, Baby Beluga, Down by the Bay, and Fly Me to the Moon among many others. This show is appropriate for all ages. 

With generous support from the Maine Public Library Fund, additional free programming is available for families and students. On Saturday, April 9 at 10 a.m., Halcyon will host a free story hour at the Waldoboro Public Library which will include narration, music, and an interactive introduction to string instruments. In addition, a free student matinee will take place at 1 p.m. at The Waldo on Friday, April 8. The matinee is already booked to capacity, however the event will be live-streamed to school groups unable to attend in-person.

“We could not be more excited to put together this show,” said Halcyon violinist Sophie Davis. “Collaborating with so many people on this project has felt like one big celebration of our maritime culture and heritage, it's an opportunity to combine beautiful artwork, humor, childhood songs, and really, just a chance to tell a classic story!”

Masks and proof of Covid-19 vaccination are required inside the theater. Adults attending with children who are not yet vaccinated will be asked a series of standard Covid questions.
