LIBERTY — The Citizens’ Association of Liberty Lakes (CALL) is offering a free Lake Keeper’s Camp in Liberty this summer. 

CALL has offered a week-long summer camp for children since 2006 to explore lake science through games, talks, and hands-on activities. Staff emphasize subjects such as erosion, the watershed, fish, invasive plants, and other wildlife who live in and around the lake.

“In 2020 we were unable to hold camp due to COVID,” said CALL, in a news releaes. “This year we are trying another model where parents, grandparents or responsible adults will be required to participate with their children.”

To sign up for any of these sessions, please visit CALL’s website, www.libertylakes.net where a registration form and additional information will be available July 1. Registration forms will also be available at the Town Office and Library.

Saturday, July 24 at 10 a.m.: Community Forest Exploration: Come explore the wonders and delights of Quigg Island’s forest led by Annette Naegel and Matt Bonner from the Georges River Land Trust. Bring your curiosity and they will provide the rest to help you unravel who and what lives in the island. To access the island, you will need to use a canoe or kayak, which will launch from the Rte. 173 Stevens Pond swimming area.

Saturday, July 24 at 10 a.m.: Boating Safety: Maine State Game Warden David Ross will conduct a question-and-answer session about boating safety, boating equipment, and what to do and NOT do while boating. There will also be a discussion of Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife laws to protect water species and a demonstration by CALL’s boating inspectors who check all boats entering at the boat launch for invasive plants. Workshop will be led by CALL board member Dan Mclean. Meet at the state park.

Saturday, August 7 at 10 a.m.: Aquatic Fauna: A talk by Dana Valleau, a wildlife biologist, and Laura Lechter, a loon biologist. Everything from insects to our largest mammals will be covered. Please bring questions. Meet at the Lake St. George State Park in the parking lot behind the main building.

Saturday, August 21 at 10 a.m.: Liberty River Walk: This one-mile hike involves an exploration of the river as it flows through the town of Liberty. Led by CALL board members Bob Kohl and Hugh Mahon, the walk will highlight the effects of the river and forest life on the health of Liberty’s lakes. Other topics include a historical perspective as Liberty developed along the river and tips on safely enjoying the outdoors. The group will meet in the town office parking lot.

Saturday, September 11 at 10 a.m.: Fun Work Day: A fun work day at the state park led by CALL president Teresa Smith and board member Linda Breslin where the children will learn about watersheds as well as what we can do to prevent harmful nutrients, which cause algae blooms, from entering our lakes. Participants will help to build a blueberry bush buffer along a part of the lake’s edge. Meet at the state park.
