A Funeral Service for Francis D. Bortz, who died December 18, 2020, will be held Friday, June 18, 2021, at 9:30 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, 434 Court Street, Reading, Pennsylvania. The Rev. John R. Francis will officiate. Interment will follow at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading.

A memorial service is planned for North Haven, Maine in the summer of 2021.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society, PO Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841 or the American Diabetes Association.

SEARSMONT — Frances D. Bortz died peacefully at her home here, Friday, December 18, 2020 after a short illness, surrounded by her family with her son, Richard, by her side.

Born April 19, 1931 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of Major General Howard C. Davidson, USAF retired, and Mary Patterson Davidson. She graduated from the Madeira School and Bennett Junior College and spent most of her adult life taking care of her family.

Predeceased by her husband, Richard F. Bortz, whom she married on May 21, 1955, her brother Stuart C. Davidson, and a grandson, Collin S. Martin, Frances is survived by her children and their spouses, Julia B. Pyatt of Denver, Colorado; Emily S. Bortz of Reading, Pennsylvania; Dinah B. Moyer and her husband Jeff of Vinalhaven, Maine; Frances “Eve” Davies of Ormond Beach, Florida; Richard C. Bortz of North Haven, Maine; and Sarah B. Martin and her husband George of Searsmont, Maine.

Devoted to her family and as “Grandy,” she was a wonderful, caring grandmother to Richard and Sarah Pyatt, Athena and Hunter Bortz, William and Jack Davies, and Morgan and Tyler Martin.

She is survived by her twin sister, Julia S. Cheshire (John), and her eldest sister, Mary H.D. Swift, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She had lived with her daughter, Sarah and her family, for the past seven years after living in Reading, Pennsylvania since her marriage.

She made everyone she met feel welcome and had a generous heart. Frances enjoyed arranging flowers and loved playing tennis until age 80. She had a special place in her heart for animals, owning many dogs, cats, chickens, horses and other animals throughout her life. She especially loved Jack Russell terriers with her latest companion, Bill, holding a special place in her heart for over 13 years.

She loved spending summers in North Haven, Maine where she was a member of the North Haven Baptist Church, North Haven Casino, Fox Islands Concerts and the North Haven Garden Club. While living in Reading, Pennsylvania, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Planned Parenthood, the Junior League of Reading, the Limekiln Hunt, Hillcrest Tennis Club and Friends of the Freedman Gallery. Her good friend, Boots Fehr, will miss her.

Funeral Services to be held at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania, will be announced in the spring of 2021.

A memorial service is planned for North Haven, Maine in the summer of 2021.
