VINALHAVEN — When the new school year begins in the fall, there will be three new faces within leadership positions within the Vinalhaven School, although two of the faces will be familiar ones.

After naming Tonya Arnold as the school’s new superintendent and principal, a move that will only last for the upcoming academic year, the school board unanimously approved a pair of current Vinalhaven teachers to also serve as assistant principals for the 2019-2020 school year.

Like Arnold’s role, the assistant principal positions will only be in place for one school year while the school board conducts a school leadership structure study in the meantime.

Bryan Feezor will serve as the assistant principal for the upper school, which serves middle and high school students.

Blake Reidy will serve as the assistant principal for the lower school, which serves elementary school students.

Both will receive stipends of $10,000 for their newly added positions.

Feezor, the school’s high school math teacher, earned majored in mathematics education and minored in education at the University of California at Santa Cruz. As a graduate student at UCSC, Feezor was a Robert Noyce Fellow as he earned his master’s degree in mathematics education. He is also nearing the end of completing a program to gain certification as a principal.

Feezor enjoys incorporating his passions and real-life experiences into his mathematics lessons, according to his school biography. His classes are filled with discussions of how mathematics can be incorporated into scuba diving, bicycling and sailing, for example.

Reidy, the school’s third grade teacher, earned her bachelor’s in elementary education from the University of New England in May 2016 and is poised to earn a master’s degree in December 2019.
