Family of Graham Lacher increases reward; expands search out-of-state

The family of Graham Lacher, missing since June 6, 2022, when he fled the grounds of Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center (DDPC) in Bangor, has increased the reward amount for his safe return from $2,500 to $3,500. They are also making a special effort to let other states know about the Silver Alert issued for him in Maine.

“We still haven’t had a single, confirmed sighting of my son, nor have his remains been found,” said his mother, Tammy Lacher Scully, in a news release. “We continue to hope he has survived, and we continue to look for him throughout the state and beyond. We’ve decided to raise the amount of the reward to encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Full details of the reward’s terms and conditions can be found on the Facebook page Missing Graham Lacher.

In addition to increasing the reward amount, the family plans to spread word of his disappearance beyond Maine.

“We are gathering fax numbers and email addresses of police departments, emergency rooms and social service agencies along the I-95 corridor as it exits the state,” said Scully.

There is no regional or national version of Maine’s Silver Alert, according to Scully, “so if Graham has left the state, there is no one looking for him. This is our grassroots version of a broader Silver Alert—our way of increasing the chance he’s found and brought to safety.”

Lacher, who was admitted to DDPC in April, is diagnosed autistic and schizophrenic. According to Scully, he normally would not congregate with others or approach them for help, but the family is hoping his survival instinct has overridden his fear of interacting with strangers.

“We worry that he has received help only sporadically and may just barely be surviving,” says Scully. “Or, if he managed to leave the state, perhaps he is in a hospital, jail or homeless shelter that doesn’t know he’s a missing person. Either way, we need more help finding him.”

In case Lacher is still in Maine, volunteers are also working on “Please Come Home” messages directed at him.

“One of our supporters came up with the idea of painting rocks and setting them in areas where possible sightings have occurred,” said Scully.

Others, she says, are working on small wooden signs or painted fabric “prayer flags” that can be hung inside or outside and are designed to get Lacher’s attention. The signs include a Latin saying that Lacher uses as a personal motto, and they urge him to contact family and come home.

A work session has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12, in Bangor, for those who want to help with this effort. Details can be found on the family’s Facebook page.
