Edith M. Merrifield, obituary

ROCKLAND — Edith M. Merrifield, 88, widow of Charles A. Merrifield, a longtime Rockport resident, died Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Windward Gardens, in Camden.

Born in Rockport, June 22, 1932, she was a daughter of Ernest, Sr. and Inez Davis Douglas. She was educated in Rockport schools.

First employed several years at Sylvania’s in Waldoboro, Edith later worked more than 20 years as a Stitcher at van Baalens in Rockland, until the closing of that facility. She then worked several years at the Samoset Resort and finished her working career with Target Marketing in Rockland.

Edith was a devoted mother and grandmother, and was noted was as a woman who always felt free to speak her mind.

She enjoyed knitting as well as sitting and watching people go by.

Other than her parents and husband, Edith was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Ernest “Tom”, Jr., George and a great-grandson, Timothy James ‘TJ’ Dodge, Jr.

She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Leach and her husband Louis of Rockland; two sons, Donald Merrifield and his wife Gayle of Augusta, James Merrifield of Union; a daughter-in-law, Leona Douglas of Lewiston; two sisters, Evelyn Taylor of Cushing, and Barbara Grigor of Rockland; ten grandchildren, Louis Leach, Jr., Holli Jewell, Pam Dodge, Katie Shaw, Douglas Merrifield, Cherri Severson, Seren Merrifield, Jamie Melville, Mindy Merrifield, Kim Merrifield; many great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Relatives and friends are invited to a walk-through visitation, Monday, April 26, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Guests are asked to wear face masks and maintain social distancing.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at 11 a.m., at the West Rockport Cemetery, Park Street. The Rev. David English will officiate.
