UNION — Dorothy Iris Anne McKay was born on May 13, 2021 at 2lbs 6oz, and 8 weeks early to Robert and Esther McKay. 

Diagnosed before birth with severe Nager Syndrome, she was met in this world by her parents and the skilled and loving team of doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital.  Together her parents and the doctors provided care and opportunities to give her small body a chance to heal and grow; she was especially treasured by loving nurses Jody and Emily. On June 2, 2021, after having spent precious days surrounded by friends and family, her body reached the end of what it could do.

In those 3 weeks, Dorothy blessed those she met with her strength, hand waves, winks, and especially holding other’s hands with her tiny, unforgettable fingers.  She loved time spent singing with her mother and was given
green maracas to join in the music making by Joanna, the music therapist. She also never tired of hearing her father read “Little Blue Truck” and had a constant companion of her nonapus, the 9-legged octopus.

She is survived by her parents, Robert and Esther; her sister, Athena Rose; her grandparents Edward and Ellen Hatch, George McKay, and Jo Anne McKay; her aunts and uncles Elizabeth (David) Houghton, Eli McKay, Aaron (Mimi) McKay, and Tom McKay; and her three cousins, Samantha, Lily, and Jude.

Her family wishes to thank the communities of Chestnut Street Baptist Church, Lyman-Morse Technologies, and Oceanside High School as well as Boston Children’s Hospital.

A chance for all to get to know Dorothy better, celebrate her life, and grieve her passing will be held on Friday, June 18, at 2 p.m., at Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Camden, Maine with private internment following at Lake View Cemetery in Union.
