Donald A. Lunt, obituary

Donald Albert Lunt passed away June 20, 2021, at the age of 88, at his daughter’s residence in Union after a period of declining health.

He was born November 17, 1932 in Rockland, Maine the son of Otis and Doris (Wilson) Lunt.

Donald grew up in Rockland and attended local schools. He joined the Air Force serving for 20 years and retired as a Master Sargent. He served in Morocco and England.

Don was a training instructor (TI) at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his meritorious service as a military training instructor. He then went on to be a training instructor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He represented the Air Force in Judo expositions as a Judo Sensei for many years. Don was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion in Florida and Maine. Angelo Dundee was his corner man when he fought in Florida and was called “Duke”. He was a boxing referee in Maine.

After he retired from the Air Force Don began lobstering in Frenchboro, was a Captain at the Maine State Prison as a food service manager, Texas Department of Corrections, and Rockland Post Office rural route carrier for 14 years.

Don was a member of many retired Air Force groups. He can always be remembered as being funny, with a big smile and a good outlook on life. He was an airplane pilot, boxing fanatic, and loved going to Texas for vacation.

Katharine lovingly took care of her dad at her home for the last 10 months.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Otis and Doris Wilson Lunt; and his brother Melvin Lunt.

He is survived by his daughters Katharine Lunt of Union and Julie Lunt Allen of Union; son, Mark Lunt of Massachusetts; daughter Debra Simmons of Alabama; brother Russell Lunt of Somes Sound; and several grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held for Donald, Thursday, July 1, 2021, at 1 p.m., at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, in Augusta.
