ROCKLAND — For more than three decades, the Irish traditional music ensemble Dervish has carried the sounds, stories, and spirit of northwest Ireland to audiences around the world. On Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m., the celebrated Sligo-based band brings its live performance to the Strand Theatre in Rockland.

One of Ireland’s most acclaimed traditional ensembles, Dervish has earned a reputation for performances that are at once virtuosic and deeply rooted, according to a Strand Theatre news release. Honored with the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award and hailed as “an icon of Irish music,” the group has performed on stages ranging from Glastonbury to Rio de Janeiro—and even atop the Great Wall of China.

"Yet for all of its international acclaim, Dervish remains connected to the intimate musical traditions from which it emerged: the Irish session, where songs and stories are passed from one generation to the next and music is as much about community as it is performance," said the news release. "Dervish carries Irish history and stories with them."

At the Strand, audiences will experience that combination of dazzling musicianship and storytelling firsthand, according to the Strand. 

The band is led by the voice of Cathy Jordan, joined by Shane Mitchell on accordion, Liam Kelly on flute and whistle, Brian McDonagh on mandola and mandolin, Michael Holmes on bouzouki, and All-Ireland Fiddle Champion Tom Morrow.

"Together, Dervish moves effortlessly between intricate dance tunes and centuries-old songs, creating a live experience that connects the history of Irish music with the sense of spontaneity and shared energy that lies at the heart of traditional Irish music," said the news release.
