Democracy and its Enemies: A Talk by Thomas F. Remington, Nov. 19
BELFAST — The Camden Conference presents distinguished political scientist Thomas F. Remington for a discussion on Democracy and its Enemies at the Belfast Free Library on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to all, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available.
As democracies worldwide face unprecedented challenges, Remington will examine democracy's core principles and current threats to democratic governance. Drawing from historical and contemporary examples, he will address crucial questions including: the balance between majority rule and minority rights; democracy's compatibility with market economies; the pursuit of social justice within democratic systems; and, the rise of populist movements and antidemocratic trends across the globe.
Remington brings expertise to these topics as Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard University and Goodrich C. White Professor (Emeritus) of Political Science at Emory University. His recent book, The Returns to Power: A Political Theory of Economic Inequality, (Oxford University Press, 2023) explores the relationship between political systems and economic disparities. His research spans multiple nations, focusing on inequality, education, and workforce development in the United States, Russia, China, and Germany.
