Debra A. Rhodes, obituary

ROCKLAND – Debra A. Rhodes, 68, died unexpectedly, Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. 

Born in Camden, February 16, 1951, she was the daughter of Nelson and Rita Rivers Grey.  Educated locally she attended Camden High School.  Throughout her life, Deb had a very special relationship with her much loved step-mother Betty Carter Grey.  

On November 11, 1967, Debra married H. Carl Rhodes in Camden.  Together they raised two children, and ran a successful catering business.  The pair operated ‘Rhodes Catering Service’ for 25 years and also a concession stand ‘Florida Buns’.  For more than 38 years they traveled to fairs in Union, Windsor, Fryeburg, and Litchfield. Even after Mr. Rhodes death in 2009, Debra continued her love of traveling.  

She as an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Augusta, a member of the United Bikers of Maine, and the Rockland Lodge of Elks.  

For many years, Deb has been a loyal employee of the Village Variety, formerly Stop-N-Go in Camden.  Her smiling face has welcomed thousands of customers to the store.  

She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.  

Predeceased by her husband Carl in 2009, Debra is survived by her children, Melissa Byer and her husband, Andrew, of Rockland; Scott Rhodes and his wife, Jasmine, of Rockland; eight grandchildren, Cody Rubenstein and his wife, Bryana; Cameron Rubenstein, Knasic Byer, Samuel Byer, Dakota Rhodes, Kaylie Rhodes, Drew Rhodes, Kiley Feraco, and Skyler Rhodes; one great-grandchild, Mason Rubenstein; her sisters, Donna Diamond of Danvers, Massachusetts; Barbara Grey of Redding, Connecticut; her brothers, Richard Grey of Seymour, Connecticut; William Grey and his wife, Dana, of Monroe, Connecticut; Robert Grey and his wife, Jan, of Bridgeport, Connecticut; and three nephews, James Diamond of Massachusetts and Matthew Diamond of Chicago, Illinois, and Carter Grey, of Connecticut. 

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.  A celebration of her life will be held at noon, Friday, June 14, 2019 at First Congregational Church of Camden, 55 Elm Street, Camden.
