ROCKPORT — It's time for another barn event at Barnswallow Books in Rockport on Halloween featuring bluegrass band Miners Creek and storyteller "Pirate" John Bullock. Gather in the barn on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate Halloween. Costumes are optional. Miners Creek will also be celebrating a second birthday while playing their distinctive take on bluegrass, integrating traditional with 60s Folk revival, Latin, Appalachian, classic rock and old timey tunes, with a sprinkling of jug band. 

The Rockport-based band features three members of the Randolph family (Whitney, Resa and their daughter, Emily) joined by Peter Proeller on claw hammer banjo. 

Pirate John will kick the evening off at 5 p.m., performing a half hour of spooky tales from Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving and Maine native Ruth Moore. Miners Creek will then take to the floor at 5:30 p.m. with a 45-minute set of music. The storyteller will then return for a longer 15 minute performance. Miners Creek will wind up the show with a second set of music.

Go early to browse Barnswallow's curated shelves of old and new books. Step through the doors and experience the feel of an honest-to-goodness community bookshop, in the heart of Rockport Village, at 166 Russell Avenue, across the street from Rockport Public Library and next to the old CMCA.

Dress warmly and in your seat by the time Pirate John takes the barn floor.

Barnswallow Books is offering this as a free community event. There will be light fare, cake, coffee and cider. The main bookshop will remain open all year and feature a small cafe beginning in mid-November.
