ROCKLAND — Solace, Knox County's a cappella hospice choir, is seeking new members. The group, now in its 10th year, has about a dozen active members and would like to increase that number to 16-20.

Requirements include a desire to sing for those near the end of life, as well as the ability to match pitch and to learn a relatively easy repertoire including folk music, lullabies, hymns, rounds, and Taize chants.

As with many choral groups, tenors are especially welcome, according to Solace, in a news release.

The group's next full rehearsal is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Route 17, Rockland. Potential new members are invited to attend to learn more.

Solace, with flexibility, sensitivity and confidentiality as core values, sings twice monthly and by invitation at the Sussman House in Rockport, and once a month at Pen Bay Medical Center.

Solace also accepts invitations to sing at private residences and nursing centers; in those settings, smaller groups, even a quartet, may sing. Evening rehearsals are held on the first and third Thursday of the month.

Several Solace members are also active with Coastal Family Hospice Volunteers. Rob Gabe, a Solace founding member, is one of those.

“Hospice work takes so many forms,” he said, in a news release. “Sharing our voices to bring comfort to those in transition and to their loved ones is among the most meaningful.”
