BELFAST — Cameron Laidlaw Rae (our beloved Bo), 85, of Belfast, Maine, loving husband of Penny Rae, gently passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020. It was his father’s birthday and he was surrounded by his adoring family.

Bo was born on November 17, 1934, in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of Cameron A. Rae, DMD, and Martha (Vuilleumier) Rae. He grew up in West Newton, Massachusetts, and as a teenager later moved to the island of
Vinalhaven, Maine. He graduated Vinalhaven High School with the class of 1952. Bo then entered the Leland Powers School of Broadcasting in Boston, Massachusetts, but left to enlist in the Air Force a year later, where
he served for four years, two of which were in Germany.

He returned to Maine and began his career as a butcher. During this time, he found the love of his life, Penny. They married, and were best friends and partners in all of life’s adventures. While living in Lincolnville, Maine, Bo and Penny started Rae’s Butcher Shop and then The Beach Store, a beachside pizza and sandwich shop. After many successful years, they sold the markets. Next, they built and operated an unfinished furniture business in Northport, Maine. Bo was known for his meticulous finishing of the furniture and had a reputation for excellence.

Having worked for many years, with their large and extended family out of the nest, Bo and Penny became snowbirds, alighting from Maine to Zephyrhills, Florida each winter. While in Florida, they enjoyed swimming,
court sports, biking, and socializing with their good friends. Back up in Maine, Bo looked forward to his yearly fishing trips with all of his sons.

They were legendary and full of many fish tales!

Throughout his lifetime, one of Bo’s greatest passions was music. He was an extremely talented guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. With the voice of an angel and harmonizing skills second to none, he recorded many CDs and sessions for the enjoyment of others. He delighted in jamming with friends and bandmates for many decades. Bo said that he woke up every morning with a song in his head.

Bo was predeceased by his parents and his step-son, Scott LaCombe.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Rae of Belfast, Maine and his children, daughter Sara Lawton and her partner Rory Huff of Southwest Harbor, Maine; daughter Edith Hardison and husband Tom Hardison of Waltham, Maine; son Donald Rae of Trenton, Maine; son Mark Rae and his wife Yvette Lahaye of Waldo, Maine; step-daughter Terry LaCombe and her partner Michael Serota of Hudson, Maine; step-son Denny LaCombe of Windham, Maine; granddaughter Kayla LaCombe and her partner Dennis Crockett of Lincolnville, Maine.

Bo is also survived by his sister, Sarah Louisa MacRae (Sally) of Suffield, Connecticut; grandchildren Lindsey, Whitney, Robert, Patrick, Brian, Perry, Rachel, Sydnee, Hayley, Mia, Cameron, Zachary and Joshua; great-grandchildren Abigail, Reagan, Carly, and Wren, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family, and good friends.

Bo will be interred at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Bo at The Mountain Sea N’ Inn 185 Atlantic Hwy, Northport, Maine, Saturday, July 18, 2020 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
