Camden honors the fallen despite Memorial Day rain
CAMDEN - Rain did little to dampen the spirit and resonance of of the ceremonies this Memorial Day in Camden. The American Legion Legion Post 30 led the communities in remembering those who gave their lives in service to the country.
Beginning at 9 a.m. on the Public Landing, American Legion Post 30 Adjutant Jeff Sukeforth introduced the speakers who led the small crowd and color guard in speech and prayer. The Lincolnville Center School sang the National Anthem. Boy Scouts laid a wreath in the harbor, TAPS was played and the Color Guard saluted with a rifle volley.
The parade stepped off at 9:30 from Union and Elm streets with stops at the Conway Boulder (Wreath laying, TAPS), Village Green War Memorial (Wreath laying, Rifle Volley, TAPS), Civil and Spanish American War Memorial (Wreath laying, TAPS), and Mountain View Cemetery (Prayer, Speech, Wreath laying, Rifle Volley, TAPS).
According to Sukeforth there are close to 600 men and women laying at eternal rest in either Mountain View or Oak Hill Cemeteries. They gave their lives so you can have the freedoms you have today.
