Camden Hills fast start sinks John Bapst

Windjammers looking forward to Tuesday’s quarterfinal

ROCKPORT – The No. 8 Camden Hills field hockey team dominated the first half and played great defense in the second to down the visiting No. 9 John Bapst Crusaders 4-0 in a Northern Class B preliminary match up.

Camden Hills (8-7-0) will now take on No. 1 Gardiner (12-2-0) Tuesday at Gardiner in a quarterfinal matchup. They have a 3:30 p.m. start time.

John Bapst finishes the season with a 3-11-1 record.

Saturday the Windjammers dominated the first half of play keeping the ball on the Crusaders side and applying pressure on the Bapst goalie Samantha Cole. 

Hilary Merrifield scored the first goal for Camden at 22:12 in the first half. The goal was unassisted. Sadie Mills took a pass from Emily Daggett in the box and poked the ball into the lower left corner for the 2-0 lead. Emily Bowen scored at 4:34 to close out the first half with an assist from Molly Davee. 

In the second half the John Bapst team picked up the pace and played well, but once again the backfield defense was superb making it easy for Camden Hills goalie Jenna Stearns to record the shutout as only one shot on goal was made b y the Crusaders. 

Emily Daggett scored a goal at 13:27 of he second half on a beautiful pass right on the stick for the assist.

Camden Hills had 18 shots in the game, 12 in the first half and six in the second. The Crusaders had one shot on goal for the match.

The Windjammers held the advantage in corner kicks 9-1.

Jenna Stearns had one save on one shot for the win and Cole had 14 saves on 18 shots. 

Camden played Gardiner in the regular season losing 1-0 on a very late goal for the Tigers. According to Camden Hills coach Lindsey Clement it was a game they could have and should have won. She is undoubtedly hoping for a switch in the outcome of Tuesday’s upcoming game.
