Burton ‘Wayne’ Starrett, obituary

WARREN — Burton “Wayne” Starrett, 97, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2022 at Quarry Hill in Camden, Maine with his family by his side. Wayne was born on June 27, 1925 to Arthur Starrett and Alena (Watts) Starrett.

He grew up in Warren and attended local schools. He graduated from Warren High School Salutatorian of his class. He attended the Fort Houstus Wire School in Virginia. After high school Wayne joined the Army in June of 1943 until February 1946. He was honored with the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon.

On December 29, 1950, he married the love of his life, June Elizabeth Boynton. In 1951 they purchased a farm on Route 90 in Warren and started a family.

Wayne held many jobs over the years as a carpenter, farmer, small engine repairman at Thomaston Agway, and was self-employed at Starrett Small Engines in Warren. From 1969-1971 he restored the Olson House-Wyeth Museum in Cushing, along with his wife, June, and sons William and John.

Wayne enjoyed music, especially playing guitar. He played bass guitar in the mid-coast musical band “Hawaiian Airs” for local dances and on WRKD radio in Rockland, Maine. Wayne and June enjoyed many bluegrass festivals and trips to Nashville, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri.

Wayne was predeceased by his loving wife, June E. Starrett; his parents, Arthur and Alena Starrett; son-in-law Robert B. Moore; brothers-in-law Eugene Boynton, James Boynton and Richard Perkins.

He is survived by his children, William Starrett and wife Patricia of Readfield, John Starrett and wife Sue of Farmington, Alan Starrett and wife Darcy of Portland, Laurie Starrett Johnson and husband Carleton of Waldoboro, Marilee A. Moore of Rockport, and Amy E. Royer and husband Richard of Brooks; grandchildren Eric J. Johnson and wife Susan of Waldoboro, Ben Starrett and wife Nicole of Raymond, Bethany Vance and her husband Josh of Barrington, New Hampshire, Zachariah Armstrong and wife Ashten of Turner, and Abigail St. Valle and her husband Storme of Augusta; great grandchildren, David Eric Johnson of Waldoboro, Owen and Lorelei Starrett of Raymond, Kahari St. Valle of Augusta, Hananiah, Isaiah Vance of Barrington, New Hampshire, and Emerson June Armstrong of Turner; sisters-in-law Catherine Boynton of Bangor and Gloria Perkins of Holden; nieces Teresa Barrows of Hamden and Amber Boynton of St. Albans; and nephew James Boynton, Jr of Arlington, Texas, and his best friend Robert Littlehale of Warren, Maine.

A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held at the Skinner Cemetery in Warren.
