AUGUSTA — Rep. Scott Cuddy, D-Winterport, presented a bill Wednesday, April 24, to the Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee to make the “Ballad of the 20th Maine” by The Ghost of Paul Revere the official State Ballad.

“Passing this bill recognizes the power of the story of the 20th Maine,” said Cuddy, in a news release. “That story of the Battle of Gettysburg, where, at Little Round Top, Gen. Chamberlain and the men of the 20th Maine protected the left flank of the Union army, is an example of the bravery and resilience that Mainers are renowned for.”

The “Ballad of the 20th Maine” was written by Griffin Sherry, a vocalist and guitarist for The Ghost of Paul Revere, and released in 2015 on the album Field Notes, Vol. 1. Sherry and the other members of the band, Sean McCarthy and Max Davis, performed the ballad at the State House on April 3.

“The Ghost of Paul Revere has succeeded in bringing the past into the present in a way that will not fade with time, said Cuddy. We need to recognize the timelessness of the moment that this ballad describes. Let’s enshrine the ‘Ballad of the 20th Maine,’ a ballad written by a Mainer, as our State Ballad to respect that moment in history.”

Rep. Cuddy is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives, representing Frankfort, Searsport, Swanville and his hometown of Winterport. He is a member of the Labor and Housing Committee.
