ROCKPORT — Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School has announced that Josie Davis, originally from Waldoboro, will be joining their staff as Advancement Officer. Davis brings tremendous skills and experience in the worlds of nonprofit management, arts administration and as a professional musician in her own right, according to Bay Chamber, in a news release.

Davis received her undergraduate degrees in violin performance and sociology from Oberlin College and Conservatory where she was a student of David Bowlin, and then received her master’s in Education degree from Harvard University.

Davis has performed in a wide-range of venues from Carnegie Hall to the Monte Music Festival in India and has appeared with her sister, Sophie, on NPR’s From the Top. She actively explores ways to share classical music in new contexts and has performed chamber music with Emanuel Ax in a taco shop and played solo Bach for Chris Thile.

As an educator, she is interested in how music can be used as a form of cultural empowerment to build bridges and strengthen communities. Her teaching has brought her to Panama, India and most recently Community MusicWorks in Rhode Island where she completed a two-year Fellowship.

In past summers, she has studied at the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, Bowdoin International Music Festival and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. She is committed to creating more chamber music opportunities for young people and is the founder and director of summer workshops for young people in Maine and Connecticut.

Davis is currently a member of Palaver Strings, a musician-led chamber orchestra that has performed on the Bay Chamber Concerts’ program many times.

Davis grew up surrounded by music and as a young girl, she participated in many educational offerings at Bay Chamber.

“Having Josie join Bay Chamber as a staff member is a coming home of sorts,” said Executive Director, Monica Kelly, in a news release. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Josie an integral part of both our concert programming and music school.”
