CAMDEN — Albert H. Guptill Jr, 82, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 13, 2019 surrounded by his family at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born to Ruth S. Gamage and Albert H. Guptill, Sr. on June 23, 1937 in Rockland, he was educated in local schools on Vinalhaven and spent time on Criehaven as well.

He married Margaret Robishaw on December 9, 1955 in Rockland and together raised their family locally.

A self-taught man with no formal schooling, Albert became a Machinist working at the Rockland Shipyard and then for the Maine State Ferry Service from where he would eventually retire. He was instrumental in, and enjoyed, helping his father work on the Eisenhower Lock located on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Massena, New York.

Known to love a good rum & Coke, he also loved puttering around in his garage making a variety of items for his friends and family. Even though he pretended to not like animals, he was fond of, and loved his grand-dogs.
Known to many as “Chief” he would often call others by that if he couldn’t remember their names.

He absolutely loved large family gatherings and would attend even if he wasn’t feeling well. The last gathering he attended was Father’s Day.

Albert had a knack for creating his own words and phrases, most notably saying “comstable” in place of comfortable and now his family hopes that he is “some comstable”.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loyal friendships and constant visits of Billy Geary, and Dick and Judy Reynolds.

Predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Albert; a son, Albert “Billy” Guptill III; a grandson, Christopher Guptill; an infant brother; two sisters, Virginia Hartford and Vera Ames; Albert is survived by his wife, Margaret of
Camden; two sons, John Guptill and his partner Sarah of Vinalhaven, and Daniel Guptill and his wife Amy of Rockland; two daughters, Susan Moccia and her husband Ted of Norway, and Ginny Harper and her husband David of Hope; and a sister, Joan Mitchell of Vinalhaven.

In keeping with Albert’s wishes, no services will be held as the family will remember him privately.
