meeting the demand as Food insecurity rates in Maine rise

ROCKLAND — AIO Food and Energy Assistance announces receipt of a $5000 grant from United Midcoast Charities Rapid Response Fund in support of AIO’s new warehouse manager role, recently filled by Joe Ryan.

Thanks to UMC’s ongoing commitment to mitigating food insecurity, AIO will be able to meet the immediate needs of those seeking our help and to provide More Food, More Often to those who need it, according to AIO, in a news release. Food insecurity rates in Maine are predicted to rise from 12% to 18%. However, AIO is prepared to meet the demand by having the warehouse manager source and purchase food so AIO’s Food Pantry remains well-stocked and ready to provide food to as many families as need help, the organization said.

The role of the warehouse manager will be increasingly important as AIO anticipates moving into its new facility located at 1A Gordon Drive, next to the current Food Pantry. The new building will provide more space overall — with a comfortable waiting room, a sizable market for clients to shop in, a warehouse that will provide ample storage, and a loading dock that can receive large food deliveries. AIO is working to raise the remaining funds necessary to complete the building and hopes to open the doors later this summer.

“AIO would like to extend our gratitude to the community of funders who support United Midcoast Charities and Rapid Response Fund, which was established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said AIO.

One hundred percent of all donations received are being given to support local nonprofits that are meeting the immediate needs of individuals seeking help in Knox and Waldo counties. The fund is intended to provide stopgap support and anticipates the likelihood that local nonprofits will find themselves under-resourced to serve a growing demand for their services.

The mission of Rockland-based AIO Food and Energy Assistance is to respectfully and compassionately support those in need in Knox County with food and energy assistance. AIO’s Food Pantry, located at 70 Thomaston Street, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and Wednesday evening, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The pantry adheres to social distancing protocols as mandated by the state. To learn more about AIO’s programs, modified operations and the new building project, please visit aiofoodpantry.org.
