The Camden Rotary Club invites the public to learn about a drive to provide portable generators to offset severe electricity shortages in Kyiv, Ukraine.
A free one-hour program at First Congregational Church, 55 Elm Street, Camden, at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 5, will feature livestream connections with Volodymyr Pilipenko, founder of the Kyiv-Balzac Rotary Club, and Peter Chabursky, a Canadian Rotarian who coordinates contributions from Rotary Clubs in North America for purchasing the generators.
“Volodymyr and Peter will describe conditions in Kyiv and the crucial role portable generators play in supplying electricity and warmth for daycare centers, family homes and other locations,” said Camden Rotary Club President Clark Doran. “Our local team will explain how Mainers can donate to support this effort.”
Last winter, the Camden and West Bay Rotary Clubs, along with donations from Midcoast citizens, supplied $32,000 to purchase portable generators in Kyiv, where three million people had minimal access to power and water due to Russian attacks on the country’s power grid and electrical infrastructure.
“We saw what a huge difference our fundraising made last winter and want to build on that success this year,” said Doran. “We are reaching out again for voluntary donations from individual Rotarians and members of the public who seek a tangible way to help the people of Kyiv. It will be inspiring to hear on Thursday about the impact our efforts can have.”
