SOUTH THOMASTON – Cheryl J. Gamage, 61 died peacefully on May 8, 2017, at home with her loving family at her side.

Born in Rockland on June 16, 1955, she was the daughter of John E. and Constance Smith Curtis. She attended Rockland schools.

Together 51 years, Cheryl married her childhood sweetheart, James E. Gamage, on Sept. 8, 1972, in Rockland. The couple made their home in Rockland most of their married lives until moving to South Thomaston two years ago.

In earlier years Cheryl held various jobs, which included work in the fish processing industry, garment manufacturing, retail sales and housekeeping.

Known for her gregarious personality, Cheryl was always laughing. She enjoyed keeping up on the local “goings-on” and was always “in the know.” When she learned of negative news, she often was heard remarking, "Ain't that awful."

She enjoyed trips to casinos with her mother and son. Once Lady Luck shined on her when Cheryl won $25,000 on a slot machine. She also enjoyed playing Black Jack. Cheryl loved shopping, particularly at the Christmas Tree Shop.

Her family was the most important factor in Cheryl's life. She loved spending time with her grandkids. Her boys enjoyed egging Cheryl on but she never got mad, even though she was the only woman living with three guys. Her family shared memories of Cheryl being scared of thunderstorms. Even if they were asleep in the middle of the night, when a thunderstorm began, she would wake everyone and make them huddle together until the storm passed. She referred to bright loud lightning as "sharp lightning."

She loved camping, spending several years at Sandy Shores in Warren. Cheryl was a wonderful cook, always giving and doing things for others.

Predeceased by her parents; Cheryl is survived by her husband, Jim Sr. of South Thomaston; her sons and their wives, James E. Jr. and Michelle Gamage of Rockport, and Michael S. and Katie Gamage of Poland; her former daughter-in-law, Heather Gamage of Yarmouth; her brothers and their spouses, Gerald S. and Gail Willey of Union, and Zachary J. and Jen Curtis of Waldoboro; two grandchildren, Noah Gamage and Nicholas Gamage; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 11, from 5 to 7 p..m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A graveside service will be Tuesday, May 16, at 3 p.m. at Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.
