Donald R. Miller, obituary
TENANTS HARBOR — Donald Raymond Miller, 90, died April 28, 2017, at the Sussman House, after suffering a stroke.
Born in Portland on Aug. 3, 1926, he was the son of Clayton and Verona Watt Miller. Donald's father was killed in an automobile accident on Nov. 11, 1930, after which Donald and his three siblings were raised by their mother and other family members.
He began working at age 14, driving trucks. Nicknamed “Red,” he also worked as a mechanic at Stanley's Garage in Rockland for a few years. In 1948 he went to Maine Sea Products as boss mechanic, including welding as well as making truck framing and trailers.
After almost 20 years employment with Maine Sea Products, in 1968 he became self-employed, establishing Don Miller Used Cars in Tenants Harbor. He successfully ran that business selling used cars, doing all of his own mechanical and body work. At his best times, he averaged at least 100 cars sold a year.
He was married to Caroline Bodman and they had two children. After retiring in 1983, he and Caroline wintered in Florida in their Elan Winnebago motor home. On the C.B. Radio, he had the handle of “Camper Man” and Caroline was called “Minnie Winnie.”
For the last seven years, Don had been battling declining health.
Donald was predeceased by his wife, Caroline in September 1994; their daughter, Jeannine A. Colpritt in November 2009; his mother, Verona Miller, at age 104, in 2008; and a brother, Winslow Miller in 2006.
He is survived by his son, Richard and his wife, Bonnie Miller; and his son-in-law, Linwood Colpritt Jr., all of St. George; his grandchildren, Caroline Hooper, Linwood Colpritt III and his wife, Valerie, and Nicholas Miller and his wife, Ashley; his great-grandchildren, Cory, Sam and Morgan Hooper, Timothy and Dylan Colpritt, and Aviana Miller; his great-great-grandchildren, Casper Hooper and Colby Dodge; and two sisters, Thelma Berry of Hyannis, Mass., and Verona Curtis of Port Clyde; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance for Donald will be held Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A reception will follow at the funeral home's 104 Limerock Street center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P. O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860.
