Robert G. Duke Sr., obituary
BANGOR — Robert G. Duke died March 29, 2017. He was born Feb. 5, 1929, in Medford, Mass., the son of Llewellyn J. and Mina Ruth (Chalmers) Duke.
Bob was raised in Melrose, Mass., graduating from Melrose High School, Vermont Academy, Saxtons River, Vt., and Tufts College in Medford, Mass., in 1951. He served in the United States Army Counterintelligence Corp, during the Korean Conflict, from 1951 to 1953.
Bob's entire working career was spent in the insurance business in Boston, Mass., Rockport, Maine, and Bangor, Maine, working for CIGNA Corp., Maine Insurance Advisory Board and Blake Barrows and Brown Inc. He retired from the Dunlap Corporation in 1992. Before and since his retirement he followed his avocation of singing barbershop harmony, most specifically for the past 30 years as a member of the Bangor Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America Inc. He also sang in church choirs and was a member of several civic organizations. For the past several years he volunteered at Manna Inc. in Bangor.
He is survived by his sons, Robert G. Duke Jr. and his wife, Doreen, of Rockport, and Alan M. Duke and his wife, Susan, of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Hodgson and her husband, Todd, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jonathan Duke and his wife, Joanna, of Rockport, Stephen Duke of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gabrielle Duke of Rockport and Brendan Duke of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; his great-grandchildren, William and Carter Duke of Rockport. Also surviving is his sister, Phyllis M. Clark and her husband, Gilmore Clark, of Bristol; and his nephew, Bruce Clark and Brenda Price of New Hampshire.
He was predeceased by his former first wife, Helen Moss Duke; his second wife, Constance Young (Bragg) Duke; and his son, Richard L. Duke.
Services will be private for the family.
