NORTHPORT — Edward C. Elwell, 82, of Northport, passed away Jan. 9, 2016, at a local hospital with his son, Eddie Jr., by his side. He was born April 18, 1933, to George and Bertha Elwell of Brooks.

He graduated from Morse High School in 1952. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after high school. He served until 1956 during the Korean War. In 1955 he was stationed in Altus, Okla., where he met his future wife, Ruby Burkeen. After his tour of duty, he and his wife returned to Maine, where they built their life and raised their family.

Ed worked at Northern Chemical and repaired televisions on the side. This led him and his brother-in-law, Charlie Ward, to work for Lafayette Television and Stereo. During this time he also owned several apartment buildings in Belfast. He went on to be an owner/operator of the Sears store in Belfast. He also became a two-term city councilor for Belfast. Ed eventually went into real estate, working for Dick Clark of Clark Real Estate. Through his dedication and hard work, he later became sole proprietor of Clark Real Estate.

Ed was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Elizabeth Hersom – the apple of his eye; his sisters, Ann Ward and Rena Ellen Parent; and his son-in-law, David Van Allen.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Ruby; his loving children, including his sons, Curtis and his fiancé, Monique and Eddie Jr. and his wife, Sally, and his daughter, Kathy Van Allen. He is also survived by his "adopted" kids, Debbie Igo, Penny Tardiff and Joe Mathieu; his sisters, Avis Bradford and her husband, Earl, and Georgia Trask and her husband, Ronnie; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Faith Temple Church in Belfast, with the Rev. Mike Horton officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Kinney Cemetery in Brooks.
