Jerry Savitz. 2015-1940 = 74

Jerry was born in Malden, Mass., to Abraham and Rebecca Savitz. He grew up in Belfast.

Early on, Jerry's boat, Mary R., was his first love. The sun rose many times over his head as he pulled lobster traps, dragged for scallops and fished Penobscot Bay. He later started Tut's Hut Glorious Open Air Market in Saturday Cove, where he met his wife, Gail Hoag.

In 1972 Gail and Jerry married in an A-frame that Jerry had built in the woods. Gail, a loving wife, was as much a part of him as he was himself. Together they raised a family of free range children, their sons, Isaac and Carl. In the 1970s he sold lobsters from City Boat Landing in Belfast. The lobster business turned into a restaurant called Darby's in the heart of Belfast, where for 30 years he smiled daily. Darby's was his second family.

Jerry had an indefatigable curiosity and was genuinely interested in life and the people around him. He lived life well: an avid golfer, lover of science fiction, especially Star Trek, 50 years of Monday night poker games. He was inspired by good conversation and great food, as well as being a wonderful cook himself.

He served on the boards of: the Belfast Co-op, the Northport Golf Club, Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the Belfast Maskers and the Basil Burwell Endowment Fund.

Jerry was an independent thinker and greeted people with a sparkle in his eyes. He always put others before himself and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, friend, and mentor.

A celebration of life will be held Monday, Dec. 21 at 5 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast.
