Mae Miller, obituary
SPRUCE HEAD — Mae E. Miller, 90, died peacefully on Dec. 8, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a period of declining health.
Born in Rockland on May 31, 1925, she was the daughter of Seymour W. and Elvie Chaples Fuller. While growing up on Clark Island, she was educated in local schools and was valedictorian of the Class of 1943 at St. George High School.
During World War II, Mae worked as a welder at Bath Iron Works.
On Oct. 29, 1944, she married Luther S. Miller in North Waldoboro. In the early years of their marriage, the Millers moved various times in pursuit of her husband's construction work. In the early 1950s, they moved to Clark Island, where Mae's husband began fishing with her brother, Nathan Fuller. In earlier years, Mae worked in local fish factories.
While she considered her primary vocation that of homemaker, mother and wife, she also worked from 1978 to 1992 with Millers Lobster Company.
With her husband, Mae enjoyed trips to Florida and Las Vegas with their good friends, the Boyntons. They also enjoyed traveling cross-country, first in a conversion van and later a fifth-wheel, with their good friends, the Harmonses. For several years, the Millers enjoyed wintering in Stewart, Fla., and more recently, in Spring Hill, Fla.
An avid beano enthusiast, whenever her husband went fishing or hunting, Mae would be off to one of her favorite beano games. She frequented Indian Island, Crystal Falls, Rockland Elks Club and Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion. Playing cards was also a favorite pastime and she was known for the black jack skill she displayed at Foxwoods, Las Vegas and in Biloxi.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Barry Kim Miller on Sept. 14, 1981; two sisters, Shirley Yattaw and Louise Linscott; and her beloved husband, Luther on Oct. 31, 2008.
